Malaysian National Claims Police Detained His Passport at DWP for Rp 200,000

JAKARTA,  A Malaysian citizen, Ilham (26) not his real name alleged that his passport was detained by an individual claiming to be a police officer at the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) 2024 held at JIExpo aKemayoran, Jakarta, on Sunday, December 15, 2024.

According to Raka (27), an Indonesian friend who accompanied him, Ilham was forced to pay Rp 200,000 to retrieve his passport. The incident occurred while the two were enjoying Steve Aoki’s performance at the Garuda Land stage.

"The passport was being held by the police. Since I know how things work in Indonesia, I gave them Rp 200,000," Raka told Kompas.com on December 19, 2024.

Raka recounted that a man claiming to be a police officer approached Ilham and asked him to follow. Ilham was led to a group of other attendees and subjected to questioning. After undergoing a sobriety test, Ilham’s passport was still withheld, prompting Raka to intervene. Ultimately, a payment of Rp 200,000 secured the return of the passport.

The situation has raised concerns about potential misconduct and the experiences of foreign visitors at public events in Indonesia.
