India Tops List of Most Affordable Countries for Digital Nomads, Indonesia Ranks Fourth

According to the Global Digital Nomad 2025 Report released by Global Citizen Solutions, India has been named the world’s most affordable country for digital nomads. The report analyzed 64 countries, evaluating living expenses, co-working space fees, housing, daily essentials, transportation, and other costs that matter to remote workers.

India’s vibrant cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, have become popular hubs thanks to their lively culture and affordability. Goa also stands out as a favorite destination, offering stunning beaches, UNESCO-recognized churches, and a unique Portuguese-influenced cuisine.

“Digital nomadism has evolved from a niche lifestyle choice into a mainstream economic driver,” said Laura Madrid Sartorett, lead researcher at the Global Citizen Solutions Intelligence Unit.

The report also highlighted the rapid expansion of digital nomad visa programs worldwide. Of the 64 countries studied, 91 percent launched their programs after 2020, and 14 of them provide a pathway to permanent residency. Meanwhile, three countries even offer a direct route to citizenship.

The Other Side: Expensive but High Quality of Life

While India and Southeast Asian countries dominate the affordability rankings, other nations top the charts for quality of life—albeit at a much higher cost. Iceland and Norway are among the most expensive destinations, while the Netherlands ranks first globally in quality of life, combining excellent public infrastructure, safety, and cultural appeal.

Many digital nomad visa programs are designed for temporary stays, but some offer opportunities for long-term residence. As the movement grows, countries are competing to attract global talent, boosting tourism, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

With Indonesia ranked fourth globally, the country continues to strengthen its position as a favored destination for digital nomads, offering an attractive mix of affordability, culture, and natural beauty.
